Science

Curriculum Intent

At Findern Primary School our science curriculum is designed to be broad, balanced and ambitious for all learners.  It has a strong focus on the skills of scientific enquiry through an investigative and exploratory approach that makes learning memorable and gives children a passionate curiosity about the world around them. This provides children with a deep understanding of both science content and scientific method.  Our science lessons endeavour to engage and stimulate the learners.

Our aim is to enrich every child’s experience by creating an environment where they are encouraged to succeed and ask questions.  This is not only done through formal learning opportunities but also by events and enrichment days, for example with local businesses like Rolls-Royce, JCB, Toyota and Bombardier.

Through our science curriculum we promote developing a respect for all living things and the environment and we endeavour to equip the learners with the knowledge and opportunity to lead healthy lives.

Curriculum Implementation

At Findern Primary School, within Key Stage One and Key Stage Two, children have weekly science lessons over one afternoon, allowing them the required time to develop their scientific skills and build upon their prior knowledge. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage, science is taught through ‘Understanding the World’, allowing all pupils to start gaining scientific experiences from the beginning of their school journey. This allows children to consistently experience high quality science lessons, which advances their expertise and understanding of science.

Across Years 1-6, Science is taught in units, in line with the National Curriculum. Where relevant, cross curricular links are made with other STEM subjects, Eco-Schools and Forest School.  We also endeavour to use the outdoor space to enhance and enrich our science learning as much as possible.

Curriculum Impact

The impact and measure of this is to ensure children not only acquire the appropriate age related knowledge linked to the science curriculum, but also skills which equip them to progress from their starting points, and within their everyday lives.

The approach at Findern Primary School results in a fun, engaging, high-quality science education, that provides children with the foundations for understanding the world. Our engagement with the local environment ensures that children learn through varied and first hand experiences and promotes a respect for the environment.
